Cultivar Profile | Kush Mints

One past cultivar we’ve carried tends to be overlooked but it shouldn’t be and this is why…

Kush Mints is the pairing of Bubba Kush and Animal Mints from Seed Junky Genetics. It’s never been available as seed and is a clone only variety. While not garnering a lot of awards and media. It stands out as a perfect example of pairing two complimentary cultivars. Luckily, we know what the genetics were that went into this fabulous cultivar. So, let’s dive further into how these genetics play a role.

With firm roots in California, Bubba Kush has thrived as an icon in the cannabis scene. Emerging around 1996 because of an OG Kush pollinating an unknown indica cultivar. The mother plant is believed to be Northern Lights but the details surrounding how it was acquired are a bit unclear, but ultimately the cultivar was named “Bubba”. Thus, Bubba Kush was born and has had a cult following ever since. Its genetics lend a lot to the overall appearance of Kush Mints as well as its taste.

Animal Mints is also a cultivar from Seed Junky Genetics, and just like Kush Mints, it’s never been available as seed. The genetics of Animal Mints are somewhat debated. With limited information from Seed Junky about this strain, pinpointing its origins is challenging. The prevailing theory, however, is that Animal Mints is the offspring of two prominent Cookies cultivars: (Animal Cookies x SinMint Cookies) which is really ((GSC x Fire OG) x (GSC x Blue Power)). So, Animal Mints is carrying over a lot of the traits possessed by GSC.

Beautiful round frosted green calyces surround the colas with gorgeous dark orange pistils wrapping around each calyx. It has a high calyx to leaf ratio which makes pruning easier. The Bubba Kush genetics lends a lot to its stocky structure and the GSC traits must be what’s making the calyces look swollen.

This cross is reminiscent to the classic Bubba Kush aroma and taste profile. Rich earthy pine aroma with a smooth sweet and creamy hash taste. The Bubba Kush genetics stand out more than the Animal Mints, but you do get undertones of a fresh creamy mint which makes this different than Bubba Kush alone.

Kush Mints stand as a testament that older genetics blend well with newer cultivars on the market. The flavor and aroma take us back to when we were kids while still displaying some unique traits that elevate the experience.
