Last week we talked about the many choices out there if you want to go buy a piece (So What About Pipes and Bongs?). But what if you’re short on cash or just extremely board and want to get creative? Rest assured that I, your local MacGyver smoker, have some ideas to keep you busy. Today’s lesson is on how to build a gravity bong.
A gravity bong, also known as a waterfall bong back in the day, is a type of water pipe that uses gravity to draw smoke into a chamber filled with water. Here’s how it works:
Materials:
- A plastic bottle (2-liter or something large)
- A container of water (sink, Cambro bucket, bathtub, pool…)
- A bong bowl
- Box cutter
- Ground cannabis
- Lighter or matches
1. Cut the bottom off the large plastic bottle.
2. Take the cap from the bottle and make a hole large enough for the bong bowl to fit.
3. Pack the bowl with cannabis and set it aside. Today we’re using Sour Cream!
4. The bottle is then placed in a larger container filled with water, such as a Cambro bucket or sink. The water should come up to just below the top of the bottle.
5. With one hand holding the top of the bottle, take your other hand and screw on the cap with the bowl.
6. Light the bowl and slowly pull the bottle upward. This will create a vacuum that draws smoke from the bowl into the bottle. As the bottle is pulled upward, the water in the larger container is forced out of the bottom of the bottle, creating a “waterfall” effect, which is where the name comes from.
7. Once the bottle is full of smoke, take one hand and unscrew the cap from the top of the bottle. Slowly inhale the smoke through the mouthpiece. As you inhale the bottle will pull back down towards the water. Stop inhaling before the top of the bottle reaches the water.
Gravity bongs are often used by experienced smokers or those looking for a stronger initial high. They can be difficult to use and may require some trial and error to get the right technique down. It’s important to note that when using a gravity bong, the smoke can be way harsher than other smoking methods, so keep some water handy!
Have fun and be safe!
